Despite Pyle’s deep and loving concerns for a woman who had been for years, not only his wife, but his boon companion, Pyle himself frequently abused alcohol, too. ”6 After her last breakdown, the two decided it would be a settling influence on their lives and Jerry’s recovery if they had a permanent place to call home. They decided to build a house in a favorite spot—Albuquerque, New Mexico—and contractors were hired to construct a small ranch-style home just outside the city. Even before it was finished, however, Ernie Pyle began to feel the tug of the great story of the day: the war in Europe.
